What Pingoon collects, why it collects it and what you can do about it. Location sits at the centre of this text: the app depends on it, so we spell out exactly how it is used.
You can read every text you have accepted inside the app as well: Settings → Agreements and Permissions.
What we collect
We collect only what the app needs to work. Optional fields can be left blank — your account still works without them.
- Account details: email address, username and display name. If you sign in with Apple or Google, these come from that account.
- Optional profile details: date of birth, gender and phone number. These are stored encrypted in the database.
- Your interests and question answers — group suggestions and matching are based on them.
- Content you create: posts, messages, photos, the events and routes you set up, the ratings you give.
- Location data — covered separately in the section below.
- A notification token, so we can send notifications to your device. It is deleted when you turn notifications off.
Location data
Your location is used for three things: showing events and routes near you, confirming that you are at a stop on a route so you can check in, and sharing your live location with your group once you are on your way.
Live location is shared only when you choose to share it, and only with the members of that group. It is never shown on a public map.
You can revoke the location permission from your device settings at any time; the app still opens without it, only the sections that show what is nearby stop working. You can also turn off “appear nearby” in the app to stay invisible to people around you.
Why we process it
We process your data to run your account, show you content that is nearby and relevant, operate groups and events, prevent abuse and improve the app.
We do not profile you for advertising and we do not sell your data to third parties.
Who can see it
You decide most of it: posts inside a group are visible only to that group’s members, private events only to the people invited. Routes you publish are open to everyone using the app.
Beyond that, your data is accessible only to the providers the service runs on: our hosting and storage provider, the email delivery service, the map service and the app stores. All of them act on our behalf and under contract.
Where the law requires it, we may share information with the competent authorities to the extent the legislation demands.
How long we keep it
We keep your data for as long as your account is open. When you delete your account, your personal data is anonymised; what exactly happens and what remains is described on the account deletion page.
Records we are legally required to retain — purchase records, for example — are kept for the period the law prescribes.
Security
All traffic between the app and the server is encrypted. Sensitive fields such as date of birth, gender and phone number are also stored encrypted in the database; passwords are stored as irreversible hashes.
Sessions are managed per device: you can see your open sessions in the app and end any of them immediately.
Your rights
You have the right to access, correct and delete your personal data and to object to its processing. Most of this you can do directly in the app: edit your profile, withdraw your permissions and delete your account.
For anything else, write to us from the Support section inside the app.
Changes
When this text changes, the new version is published here. For significant changes the app asks you to accept the text again at sign-in; the record of your earlier consent is kept.
